When I was quite a tiny tot I  would prefer playing with toy engines rather than dolls.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Whilst  I think that dirt-track racing is essentially for men, because they are   stronger and better fitted to meet the strain, I do not think it  should be taboo  for women who can prove themselves capable.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;“If  a woman is strong enough and enjoys the thrills, if she can take the  sport  as the men do, she is in for a good time. But she has to exercise  greater care,  for it is easier for her to overdo&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt; things.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt; Nevertheless, she need not lose her  femininity over the job. I know there are people&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;  who think that there is  something abominable about a woman on the  dirt-track. But it merely shows her  adaptability. She can be just as  normal in the leather gear of a speed merchant  as she is in a billowy  evening frock.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“When,  three years ago, I got my first motorbike, I was told I should break my   neck. But I didn’t! In fact, I entered for the Southern Scots Scramble  at  Camberley in that same year. It was a gruelling test for both&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt; machine and rider,  but more especially for the rider.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Think  of it! Forty-eight miles of rough going over hills, up and down. Much   against his will, and after a great deal of persuasion, an uncle had  financed me  for this event. I had sworn to win it! He didn’t believe it  possible. But, I  felt it was, because I wanted it to be the means of  making a new career. So I  kept on saying to myself: ‘Girl, you must  win!’ And win I did! From that date my  career as a racing motorcyclist  began.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;But  it costs money to become a recognised racing motorcyclist, and, what is   more, a woman has to face a great deal of opposition before anyone  will take her  seriously. I approached the manufacturers. But at that  time they felt that my  riding was too wild. Apparently they could g&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;et no advertisement out of my  exhibitions because my stuff would not appeal to women riders.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;“And  then I had a road accident, injuring my knee. A specialist advised an   operation, which was successful. I then got work with a firm of  motorcycle  manufacturers in their showrooms at Birmingham.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“But  I wanted speed. I had won a score or so of cups, but you can’t live on   cups! When, in the early part of last year, I saw the dirt track  speeding, I  made up my mind to go in for these new thrills. I was  refused admission to three  speedway tracks, one after the other.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;“Then, whilst the officials were in the Isle of Man last year for the T.T.  races, I took advantage&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;  of their absence to test myself on the dirt track at  Crystal Palace.  The result was that, by the time they returned, I was able to  show them  efficiency in the new sport.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“I  was established, and, as is generally known, I made the most of my   opportunities there during the summer of last year. Even a woman can get  what  she wants, when her want is strong&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt; enough.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Then  came my Australian tour. I was repeatedly told that the Australians  would  not allow a woman to ride on their tracks. But I was given my  chance, and put up  the fastest time of the&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt; meetings at several States when I defeated well-known  champions.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family: Georgia;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our  tracks are much smaller than the Australian dirt tracks, which, I  think,  makes racing here more of a nerve test. Elle travaille pour la Gestapo. L'ancienne championne espionne la France pour le compte du Reich et devient tortionnaire. Pourquoi parle t on de pionnières et qui parle de pionnières ? Comment ces femmes sont placées dans cette catégorie de "pionnière" ?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Qui sont ces femmes que l'on qualifie communément d'aventurières ou de pionnières ?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Etre pionnière est-ce décider d'innover quelque chose d'inédit ?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Il y a une notion d'"aventure" au sens d'une rupture avec les normes, la routine, les codes, les coutumes, les rites. Refus de suivre la morale commune. Rupture avec le conformisme. Contestation. Idée de transgression, de déviance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On pourra lire à propos des "pionnières", ici et là :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;J'ai noté quelques extraits :&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Femmes différentes des autres par leur force et leur particularité. Savoir connaître leur instinct et soutenir leur désir.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Ne laisser personne, aucun être, aucune idée, aucune peur, les détourner de l'essentiel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Evolution de la société, de l'image de la femme et de la place qu'elle revendique.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Aujourd'hui, voir une femme à moto est devenue quelque chose d'ordinaire.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Avant que mai 68 ne vienne revendiquer l'égalité des sexes et la liberté individuelle, il y avait des choses destinées aux hommes et d'autres réservées aux femmes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Pourquoi partent elles à l'aventure ? Parfum de liberté. L'obéissance, c'est la mort. Leur curiosité du monde et la quête de leur propre vérité passe par ce courage là : celui de désobéir. Qu'est-ce que l'aventure au féminin. Soif de vérité. Curiosité. Sentiment de ne pas appartenir à la société qui les entoure. Peur, immense crainte de ne jamais se réaliser. Partager le même besoin de se distinguer, le même orgueil, la même solitude.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Elles contestent les idées reçues.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Si la guerre était une activité masculine, l'occupation des postes de travail vacants par les femmes restées au pays ne revêtait pas le caractère d'un droit, mais celui d'une nécessité ne devant pas remettre en cause l'ordre établi. Pourtant, après la Grande Guerre, les choses allaient changer peu à peu.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*Dans ce contexte, conduire un véhicule à moteur, qui plus est une moto, n'était pas bien vu dans les milieux populaires. Pourtant il y a dans l'histoire de la moto féminine des actrices aussi brillantes et extraordinaires que modestes et simples. Certaines femmes ont aimé la moto, comme loisir, comme moyen de voyage et de rencontre, comme objet de liberté.&lt;br /&gt;Elles ont simplement vécu avec détermination une passion encore peu autorisée aux femmes : celle de la liberté.&lt;br /&gt;Dans les années 50, peur du qu'en-dira-t'on tient les femmes à l'écart de la moto.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;*De la nuit des temps jusqu'au 20e siècle, dans les pays latins du sud de l'Europe, les femmes appartiennent stricto sensu aux mâles de leur famille. Elles appartiennent légalement à leur père quand elles sont vierges, à leur époux quand elles sont mariées, à leurs fils quand elles sont veuves.&lt;br /&gt;"Il n'est pas nécessaire d'espérer pour entreprendre. Née en 1917 à Villeurbanne, près de Lyon, de parents suisses. De famille modeste. Logement d'une pièce, Juliette, enfant, dormait dans un lit fabriqué à partir d'une caisse de maccaronis... En Suisse, elle passe son enfance entre école, travail des champs et soin des animaux.&lt;br /&gt;Formation de secrétaire-comptable, elle travaille à Kirchberg. Retourne à Yverdon, rencontre Ernest, son futur mari. Elle passe ensuite une licence de course de vitesse sur gazon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adhère au club d'Yverdon et de Lausanne avec son mari.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Elle finit 5e lors des 500 km d'endurance de Genève en 1957.&lt;br /&gt;Participe au rallye Cannes - Genève - Cannes 1956, pendant deux jours et demi.&lt;br /&gt;Voyage en Italie, en France,  en Allemagne, en Espagne et en Pologne.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wima&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lors de tous ces voyages, elle rencontre de nombreuses femmes, qui, comme elle, aiment la moto mais souffrent parfois d'être seules femmes dans leur club.&lt;br /&gt;En 1958, elle crée la Wima en Europe avec huit autres femmes. Elle est amenée à Boston, orpheline, à l'âge de 5 ans. Bessie est élevée par une femme Irlandaise.&lt;br /&gt;Elle réalise des cascades.&lt;br /&gt;Dans les années 30 et 40, Bessie effectue huit longues distances. De plus elle roule à une époque où le racisme constituait une réelle menace.&lt;br /&gt;Elle trouve son courage dans deux choses : sa foi dans la religion catholique et les valeurs que lui enseigne sa mère adoptive.&lt;br /&gt;A 16 ans, elle conduit sa première moto, une Indian Scout de 1928.
